Prof Heike Selmer
Professor for Fashion Design at weißensee kunsthochschule berlin
In 1993, Heike Selmer graduated from the Royal College of Art in London with a MA in Womenswear with distinction. In the same year she was appointed designer of the new SET Label of the fashion house Louis Féraud. Her later career as fashion designer included positions as creative director and designer for Hess Natur, a German ecological fashion brand, and as senior womenswear designer for Nitya, Paris. Freelance commissions included companies as diverse as IFF International Fragrances/New York and Mothercare/London. In 2003, Heike Selmer started teaching as lecturer for interdisciplinary fashion and textile projects at Offenbach University of Art and Design and was appointed Visiting Professor in Spring 2006. In Autumn 2006 Heike Selmer was appointed Professor for Artistic and Conceptual Fashion Design at weißensee kunsthochschule berlin. Heike Selmer is founding member of greenlab, Laboratory for Sustainable Design Strategies at Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee. Her exhibitions include fashiontype, an exhibition about fashion + typography at Klingspor Museum, talentladen, a virtual fashion/art/concept/ design gallery and many fashion shows and exhibitions of her students’ work.
Prof Valeska Schmidt-Thomsen
Professor for Fashion Design at Berlin University of the Arts,
Valeska Schmidt-Thomsen studied fashion design at the Royal Academy for Fine Arts in Antwerp/Belgium. After her graduation in 1994 she took over the product managing of inhouse collection Callaghan and in the following years also for the license productions Chanel and Helmut Lang at Zamasport SpA / Italy. Later Valeska Schmidt-Thomsen managed the new brands Stella McCartney and Balenciaga at Gucci Group / Italy. In 1996, she presented with Gerrit Mertens in Milan the collection "Fashion - Furniture" a combined work of the two fields. In 2002, as Head of Design she joined Milan-based label Costume National, for which she also worked as a freelance designer. 2004 she was visiting Professor of Fashion Design at the Berlin University of the Arts. In 2005 she was appointed Professor of Fashion Design at the Berlin University of Arts and managing director of the Institute for Fashion- and Textile Design at the Berlin University of Arts.
